How the AI coach works

The coach is the part of Divorcery people have the most questions about, and the part you deserve the clearest answers on. This page explains it in plain language: why its answers fit your situation instead of being generic, what happens to the things you tell it, and where its limits are.

Why its answers fit your situation

A generic chatbot knows nothing about you, so it answers in generalities. The coach is different, and the difference is not magic. It is that Divorcery does the remembering.

Every time you send a message, the app assembles your situation and sends it along with your words:

A summary of the profile you built during onboarding: your state, your circumstances, what you said matters to you
Your checklist and how far through it you are
The conversation the two of you have had so far
Our instructions defining how the coach should behave

That is why you can ask what to expect next and get an answer that accounts for where you live and where you are in the process, instead of a paragraph that begins with "it depends." It is also why the coach and the checklist feel like one product: the coach can see the same tasks you do.

And it is the whole trick. Everything personal in that list came from you. The coach knows your situation because you told the app, not because it looked you up.

What we promise about what you tell it

The coach's replies are generated by large language models operated by Anthropic (Anthropic, PBC); Divorcery sends the conversation there to produce each response. Around that flow we make specific commitments, and the Privacy Policy records every one of them:

Your conversations are not training data. Under our agreement, Anthropic does not use them to train its AI models without your separate, express consent.
They are not for sale, and they feed no advertising. We do not sell your information and we do not use it to build advertising profiles. It exists to help you through your divorce, and for nothing else.
They are encrypted, in transit and at rest, stored on Amazon Web Services infrastructure in the United States.
They are yours to erase. Delete your account in the app and your stored data is removed when you confirm. You can also ask by email, and we complete the deletion within 30 days of verifying the request.

This page is the plain-language version. The Privacy Policy is the complete accounting, provider by provider, and it governs.

Where its limits are

Knowing what the coach is not is part of getting real value from it.

It is not a lawyer, and nothing it says is legal advice. Divorce is governed by state law and the differences between states are substantial. The coach can help you understand the terrain, prepare your questions, and walk in organized. The decisions that get signed or filed belong with a licensed family-law attorney in your state.

It is not a therapist, and it does not replace any licensed professional: attorney, therapist, or financial advisor.

It can be wrong while sounding confident. Every AI system can. Treat the coach like a well-read friend who has been through this before: genuinely useful for understanding what is ahead, never the final word on a consequential decision. It is software, not a person. No human is reading your messages and typing back, and nobody is on the other end in an emergency. If you need help right now, the Support page lists who to call, starting with 911.

The same instinct, everywhere

None of this is behind the app, either. The guides and questions are free to read, and they are the same body of knowledge the coach draws on.

The website you are reading sets no cookies and runs no tracking. The app asks only for what it uses, and uses what you share only for the purposes you would expect from a divorce-coaching app. That is the standard the coach is built to, too: your information is there to help you through this, and for nothing else.
